Turtle scales are formed in two ways

In vertebrates, the formation of feathers, hairs and scales is generally dictated by molecular genetic factors. The scales on the heads of crocodiles are an exception, as they result from a purely mechanical process of skin folding. A new study from the University of Geneva shows that turtles combine these two distinct processes to develop their scales according to the regions of their head.
