The last two conclaves lasted two days. A derisory length of time compared to the three years it took to elect Gregory X in the 13th century. The cardinals eventually cloistered themselves in the papal palace at Viterbo, north of Rome. Inhabitants wearied by the indecision removed the roof of the building, in order to speed up discussions.
