While genes provide the grand instructions for living things, they are not enough on their own to explain the diversity of shapes observed in nature. A study conducted by the University of Geneva and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory shows that the physical properties of tissues, their ability to stretch, contract or resist deformation, also play a decisive role.
