Torments of the soul, melancholy, burn-out, phobias, traumas, psychoses, the demand for psychological health care has exploded in recent years. But 150 years ago, these pathologies were still considered as singularities of character or ordinary illnesses. Psychic distress has become a world in itself, with its own specialists and institutions, including psychiatry. How did it emerge and evolve in Switzerland? What place was given to those who suffered, and how did psychiatry become an eminently political field in human societies?
