A major discovery in Tuscany: a colossal reservoir of 6,000 km³ of magma has been identified at a depth of between 8 and 15 km, totally invisible from the surface. An Italian-Swiss team led by the lʹUniversity of Geneva has revealed this structure using ambient noise tomography, a method that exploits natural vibrations to "X-ray" the subsurface. This breakthrough paves the way for faster, less expensive exploration of geothermal resources and critical metals.
